For women facing obstacles in childbearing, this fast is also considered extremely fruitful.

Ahoi Ashtami Puja Vidhi: Step-by-Step Guide

Following the Ahoi Ashtami Puja Vidhi ensures that the fast is completely successful and the mother's blessings are attained. The complete method of worship is given below:

  1. Morning Bath and Resolution: Wake up early in the morning on the day of the fast, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. Thereafter, remember Ahoi Mata and take a resolution for the waterless fast.
  2. Creating the Image on the Wall: Draw an image of Ahoi Mata using geru (red ochre) on the wall of any sacred space in the house. The image includes the depiction of the Mother, a porcupine (seh), and its young. If drawing on the wall is not possible, you can also use calendars or posters available in the market.
  3. Establishment of the Vedi: Place a wooden chowki near the wall and spread a red cloth over it. Place a kalash (karwa) filled with water on it. Cover the mouth of the kalash with a lid and make a Swastika on it with roli.
  4. Worship of Ahoi Mata: Offer roli, akshat, and flowers to the Mother. Afterward, offer bhog of milk and bhat (cooked rice) to the Goddess. In many places, puri and halwa are also offered as bhog.
  5. Offering the Garland: Place the silver Ahoi (also called 'haat' or 'mala') in the worship after applying roli and akshat to it. This garland has two silver beads, which are increased or worshipped every year during the fast.

Mythological Story of Ahoi Mata (Ahoi Mata ki Katha)

Listening to or reading the Ahoi Mata ki Katha during the fast is considered mandatory. The fast does not yield full rewards without the story. According to mythological lore:

In ancient times, there lived a merchant who had seven sons and one daughter. On the occasion of Diwali, for the plastering and cleaning of the house, all seven daughters-in-law and the daughter went to the forest to fetch mud. The youngest daughter-in-law's brother was the youngest in the house. While the seven daughters-in-law and sister-in-law were digging soil, the youngest daughter-in-law's khurpi (trowel) accidentally hurt a porcupine's baby, causing its death.

Enraged by the death of her cub, the mother porcupine cursed her, saying, "I will make your womb barren!" Hearing this, the youngest daughter-in-law became terrified and pleaded with the other daughters-in-law for protection. Displaying cruelty, the elder daughters-in-law said that since the curse was laid upon her, she must bear its consequences. However, among the sisters-in-law, the youngest unmarried sister said, "To protect your children, I take this sin upon my head; I will suffer the punishment in your place."

Following this sacrifice by the sister-in-law, the mother porcupine said, "You have done a great virtuous deed, come under my refuge." Afterward, the mother porcupine taught her the rituals of the Ahoi Mata fast. That sister-in-law worshipped and fasted for Ahoi Mata with utmost devotion. With the blessings of Ahoi Mata, the empty womb of the youngest daughter-in-law was blessed, and all her nephews (the children of the elder daughters-in-law, upon whom danger was looming) were saved. Ever since, the tradition of keeping the Ahoi Ashtami fast for the protection of children has continued to this day.

Main Rules and Precautions of the Fast

This fast is extremely rigorous and disciplined, so mothers must pay special attention to the following points:

  • Use of Knives or Sharp Objects Prohibited: On the day of the fast, one should avoid using any sharp objects (such as knives, scissors) in the house or during worship.
  • Stay Away from Anger and Falsehood: Do not get angry at anyone on the day of the fast, do not bring bad thoughts into your mind, and remain entirely pious.

Tradition of Offering Arghy to the Stars

In the evening when stars appear in the sky, mothers look at the stars through a sieve (like in Karwa Chauth) or directly through their sight. Afterward, Arghy of water and milk is offered to the stars. Wishing for the long life, good health, and bright future of their children, mothers seek their blessings. Following this, the fast is concluded (paran) by feeding water and sweets to the child with their own hands.
